Shhh… Don’t tell anyone, but I went to check out the vacant LIRR railway this morning. It was absolutely beautiful. The tree cover was amazing and, although the dense undergrowth made for difficult walking as I made my way from the Metropolitan Avenue intersection up to Yellowstone Boulevard, it was a thrill being up there. It was a damp day but surprisingly warm to be only four days before Christmas. The moist foliage underfoot and gray sky overhead lent an air of calm as I walked through the off-limits slice of wilderness right in Queens, NYC. Of course the trees where defoliated, this being winter and I noticed a lot of decay going on, this would explain the incredibly rich soils that where to be found underneath the many layers of leaves and leaf mold. It was nice to walk the line and reminded me of childhood walks through the woods behind my home in Mississippi. I look forward to seeing other sections of the QueensWay covered in snow and then budding with the promise of spring in the future.
